Bon Appetit Catering

January - May 2019 • La Mirada, CA

What I liked

Free food opportunities, helpful and fun coworkers, it's easy to pick up shifts

What I wish was different

People would take your shifts without telling you (happened to me THREE days in a row), your shift can range from 2 minutes to MAYBE 2 hours if you're lucky (not worth it - also don't know how it's legal to come in for a shift and not get paid for at least 2 hours??). It's a waste of time going into work for a 30 minute shift. The shifts are just terrible hours because they're scheduled around events (which makes sense...but just saying it's not worth it). You can work every single day and still be making less than $100 a week. You will never be fully prepared for this job, you're always learning/asking questions. If you end up taking this job, it's based on the exact minutes you clock in so if you time it right it will round up 15 minutes. Good luck.

Advice

Absolutely go find a different job unless you are SUPER desperate <3 xoxo

Engineering Intern

May - July 2019 • La Mirada, CA

What I liked

Pretty much I loved everything that I did as an intern this past Summer! Specifically, I had the opportunity to intern as an engineering student at Biola University as a part of the Stewart Engineering Internship program. I learned lots about the whole engineering process, a CAD program called SolidWorks, 3-D printing, and laser-cutting. A huge highlight was simply getting experience in what it is really like to be an engineer and being able to participate in hands-on projects for 8 weeks. I also really liked how this Biola science summer program encouraged students to interact and help other departments within the sciences center, which also helped me gain even better communication skills. Last, but certainly not least, it was definitely enjoyable to have engineering mentors who helped guided our projects throughout the duration of the program as well as other students to work alongside with, making my eight weeks as an engineering intern so enjoyable.

What I wish was different

There was not really anything that I wish had been different except that I wish the internship was maybe a few weeks longer (like 10 or 12 weeks versus 8 weeks). Other than that, I definitely enjoyed my experience interning on-campus!

Advice

From my experience, I would probably say that it is crucial to put in effort into the time one is interning. This is because I really believe that you gain whatever amount of effort you put into something. So I would say that it is very important to have a hard work ethic, be willing to learn, and be diligent to keep up with projects and whatever tasks your mentors/boss has for you. Internships are a great way to prepare oneself for the workplace in the "real world," because along with it, one can gain so much experience and valuable skills for a real job.

Men of Color Affinity Group Intern

August 2023 • La Mirada, CA

What I liked

The work environment is amazing here at SEID. The supervisor has definitely come alongside me in a lot of ways to help me thrive as an affinity group intern. The workload is not too overwhelming either and would make me work well when work needs to be done.

What I wish was different

There are not many hours to work anymore. They made the system far more efficient so they cut down on student worker hours. In Summer we used to work 25-30 hours weekly, now everyone gets 6-8 hours weekly.

Barista

August - December 2018 • La Mirada, CA

What I liked

It was on campus and it was a job that used the skill I had acquired over the years working at Starbucks.

What I wish was different

Well, the coffee cart eventually got shut down and that was sad. It was a really unique gathering spot on campus and there has been nothing like it since...

Advice

There are opportunities for networking everywhere you go! I might have just been working at an on-campus coffee shop but it allowed me to meet many students and professor I didn't know before.
